PETALING JAYA: Danthai Boonma has vowed to lead Thailand to glory in the Incheon Asian Games after becoming the first golfer from his country to capture the 27th MPI-Saujana Amateur Championship title.
In Thursday’s final round, the 18-year-old displayed nerves of steel in the final hole to fend off Australian world No. 46 Jarryd Felton by a single stroke.
With a slim one-shot advantage heading into par-four 18th, the reigning SEA Games double gold medallist pulled his second shot into the back-left greenside bunker, with the ball sitting on a sharp downslope.
With the pin set a few feet from the water edge, he needed to at least secure a par to hold off Felton, who was about 12 feet away with a birdie chance.
Boonma brilliantly landed the ball three feet from the pin as Felton missed his birdie putt.
The Thai then duly made par for a two-over 74 and a three-day tally of 214 against Felton’s 76 for 215 to confirm his biggest amateur Open victory outside Thailand.
““I have won many amateur titles back home, but nothing beats this one. I hope to end my amateur career in grand fashion by winning the Asian Games gold,” he said.
