PETALING JAYA: Golfer R. Nachimuthu maintained his one-stroke lead after the third round of the PGM Tour’s RM160,000 Kinrara Closed Championship at Kinrara Golf Club in Puchong.
He shot a one-under 70 to move to a three-day total of eight-under 205, putting him just one stroke ahead of the chasing pack of S. Sivachandhran (68), Khor Kheng Hwai (68), Iain Steel (68) and Arie Irawan (69).
Akhmal Tarmizee (65), Danny Chia (66) and Shaaban Hussin (71) are in jointh sixth, a shot further back.
Unlike his blemish-free second round when he shot a 66, Nachimuthu had two bogeys on his card on Wednesday that were offset by three birdies. Still, it left him with a good chance of landing his first title of the season.
Akhmal, who is just two shots off the pace and seeking a first Tour title since his victory at the Maybank Tour Players’ Championship in 2012, was delighted with his performance, given that it marked his best round in almost 18 months.
“I am very happy with how I played today. All aspects of my game were in good touch and this is the first time it has been like that in about 18 months.
“I know to win this tournament I will have to play like that again tomorrow, or even better, as there are very good players on the leaderboard.”
The 25-year-old matched his best low score on Wednesday, which he set at an Asean Tour event in Indonesia in 2008. He added that he was comfortable with his swing and looked forward to having a shot at the title on Thursday.
