(Reuters) - Captain Wayne Rooney remains a "hugely influential" presence in the England dressing room despite losing his starting spot at his club Manchester United and the national side, interim manager Gareth Southgate has said.

Rooney was dropped from the starting team for England's World Cup qualifier draw with Slovenia this month and has been used as a substitute by United manager Jose Mourinho.
