JOHOR BARU: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) took a giant step closer to the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals with an emphatic 5-0 win against Penang in a Group C match at the Larkin Stadium.
The newly-crowned Super League champions are on course for the double judging by their spirited display as they raced to a comfortable 3-0 lead at half-time.
JDT got their goals through Jorge Diaz (third minute), Luciano Figueroa (29th, 54th), Mohd Amri Yahyah (38th) and Hariss Harun (83rd).
In Kota Baru, Armed Forces kept their quarter-final hopes alive in Group C with a dramatic come-from-behind 2-1 win over Kelantan at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium.
The Red Warriors led through Liberian striker Francis Doe’s goal in the 43rd minute but the soldiers hit back with goals from Argentine Juan Arostegui (78th) and skipper Hairuddin Omar (87th).
JDT lead Group C with 10 points while Kelantan are second with six points. Forces are third with five points while Penang are virtually out of the quarter-final race with just one point.
Pahang, meanwhile, surged to the top of Group A after beating Felda United 2-0 at the Selayang Stadium, thanks to winger R. Gopinathan’s 66th-minute strike and Dickson Nwakaeme’s penalty kick in stoppage time.
The Elephants have nine points while Felda dropped to second spot with seven points. Johor Darul Ta’zim II are third with four points and Lions XII prop up the group with two points.
Lions XII are staring at an early exit after being held to a 2-2 draw by Johor Darul Ta’zim II at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
