PETALING JAYA: The Harimau Muda Under-16 team roared back to clinch a berth in the semi-finals of the Asia Champions Trophy.
S. Balachandran’s side scored an emphatic 3-0 victory over Group A leaders PVF Vietnam at the Frenz Stadium in Janda Baik, Pahang, on Saturday. The Malaysians finished second with 20 points while the Vietnamese topped the group on 25 points.
Najib Abdullah gave Harimau Muda a flying start, scoring the first goal past goalkeeper Phan Van Bieu in the seventh minute.
But the Malaysians had to wait until the 72nd minute to score goal No. 2 through striker Najmuddin Samat. Muhammad Hafiy Haikal Ismail completed the scoring seven minutes later to seal the all-important victory.
Harimau Muda, who are preparing for the AFC Under-16 Championship in Thailand in September, will face Chonburi FC of Thailand at the Chonburi Stadium in the first leg of the semi-finals on Aug 10.
Frenz United Malaysia will play PVF Vietnam at the Frenz Stadium in the first leg on Aug 9.
