Malaysia stage comeback in AFC futsal meet

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia kept alive their hopes of reaching the AFC Futsal Championships quarter-finals after stunning Lebanon 5-1 in a Group C match at the Phu Tho Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City.

Malaysia’s win over the world No. 49 Lebanon on Saturday was the perfect comeback after their 1-7 loss to Thailand in their opening match on Thursday.

Goals from Mohd Shamsul Akmar Zamri (1st and 23rd minute), Saiful Nizam (5th and 11th) and Saiful Aula (34th) handed world No. 73 Malaysia the crucial win.

Lebanon’s solitary goal from Ali Tneich in the 16th minute was mere consolation in a match dominated by the Malaysians.

The hard-earned win places Malaysia second in the group after two matches with three points based on a better head-to-head record against third-ranked Lebanon who also have three points.

Thailand lead the group with six points after beating bottom side Taiwan 5-2.

Malaysia now need to beat Taiwan in their final group match on Monday to confirm their berth in the last eight.
