GEORGE TOWN: Penang are on the verge of signing another Brazilian striker in their bid to win the Premier League title.
Brazilian striker Luiz Ricardo Lino Dos Santos, who stands at 1.94m, comes highly recommended. Dos Santos was seen seated next to compatriot and injured Penang striker Hilton Mauro Moreira in the grandstand when the Panthers mauled Johor Darul Ta’zim II 4-1 at the City Stadium on Friday.
Penang are second in the 12-team league with 26 points after 11 matches, the same total as leaders Police but with an inferior goal difference. Only the top two teams get promoted to the Super League next season.
“Dos Santos has been here since Wednesday,” said Penang team manager Mohamed Azizuddin Mohamed Shariff.
“Our Brazilian contact, who recommended us Brazilian ace Fabio da Silva to play alongside Moroccan hitman Merzagua Abderrazak in the late 1990s, speaks highly of him.
“With our four foreign players all playing well at this point in time, we want our coaching panel, headed by chief coach K. Devan, to make a final decision on Dos Santos.
“Dos Santos definitely needs to convince our coaching panel that he is a quality hitman if he is to come under the Penang FA payroll,” added Mohamed Azizuddin, who is one of the three Penang FA vice-presidents.
Penang already have the maximum four foreign players. Besides Moreira, the others are Angolan striker Buengo Andre Titi and two South Koreans – attacking midfielder Lee Gil-hoon and defender Lee Kwang-hyeon.
There are speculations that Titi is likely to be axed due to his inconsistent performance. He scored two goals against JDT II but it may have come a little too late.
