Selangor still have a chance in AFC Cup

PETALING JAYA: The Red Giants’ campaign in the AFC Cup football competition is far from over.

National midfielder S. Kunalan said the morale boosting 3-1 win over table-toppers Hanoi T&T of Vietnam has given them a lifeline in the competition.

“It is the perfect start to the second round of the competition. The first round ended without a win. The victory against the Vietnamese side has put us back on the right track. We are fired up to do better in the remaining two fixtures,” said Kunalan on Wednesday.

Brazilian striker Paulo Rangel starred for Selangor with a hat-trick at the Shah Alam Stadium on Tuesday.

Despite the three points, Selangor are in third spot with five points from four matches. Hanoi T&T lead the standings with nine points and are ahead of second-placed Arema FC of Indonesia by two points. Basement side Maziya SC of Maldives are out of the race with only a point.

Selangor play Arema FC next at the Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang, on April 9 before wrapping up their fixtures against Maziya SC at home on April 23.

Kunalan said a win against the Indonesian side should put them in strong contention to advance to the round of 16.

“We drew with the Indonesian side (1-1) in the opening game. The outcome of this match will more or less decide which team will progress to the next round,” said Kunalan.
