Mohd Aidil: Players need to step up

PETALING JAYA: National skipper Mohd Aidil Zafuan Abdul Razak has called on his team-mates to step up their game if they want to change Malaysian football’s fortunes.

The centreback reckons that whoever the national coach is, it is the players who hold the key to raising the standard of football in the country.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have been dragging their feet in the search for a new national coach.

Interim coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee is set to switch his focus to the Harimau Muda A squad after guiding the national team to a 2-1 win over Yemen in their final Asian Cup Group D match on Wednesday.

The Harimau Muda A team are playing in the Queensland Premier League.

“I’m not in the position to comment on the appointment of the new national coach ... that’s up to FAM to decide,” said the Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) player.

“But I think it’s time for the players to step up and improve our football standard. We can bring in a world-class coach but the fact is our football level is not there yet.

“For me, the chemistry between the players is more important because they are the ones who will be playing ... implementing the coach’s tactics on the pitch.”
