No cheer for Firdaus in sprint at World Juniors

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian cyclist Mohd Firdaus Mohd Zonis failed in his bid to claim a second medal in the Track World Junior Championships in South Korea.

The 18-year-old, a bronze medallist in the 1km time trial on Sunday, could not churn up the power in his last-16 showdown against homester Park Jeone in the boys’ sprint at the Gwangmyeong Velodrome.

Firdaus, a triple champion at the Asian Junior Championships, had another chance to progress from the repechage. Again, he came up short to finish second behind Taiwan’s Kang Shih-feng and out of the quarter-finals.

Mohd Shahrin Mohd Shariz, the other Malaysian representative, failed to clear the first round of 32 after losing to Gil Benjamin of France.
