LTdL: Grmay ready for Genting climb

KUALA LUMPUR: South African team MTN Qhubeka are looking to get some good results atop Genting Highlands in Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL).

Last year, their Ethiopian rider Tsgabu Grmay finished ninth overall in the race and seventh atop Genting.

MTN Qhubeka sports director Kevin Campbell said the team is looking to finish the race on the podium as Grmay has the ability to mix it up with the climbers atop Genting.

“That is what we hope for, but we have to look around us and be careful of guys like (Natneal) Berhane of Europcar and the Colombians.

“The situation here is quite different from other big races as most teams send their second stringers to race. But most of them are just looking for the opportunity to show themselves and we have to be careful,” said Campbell.

Despite the young age of most competitors in the LTdL, Campbell said the 22-year-old Grmay will have to play it smart in the steep climb towards Genting, where it gets really steep just three kilometres before the finish.

“Last year, he was outfoxed by the other riders on the climb and he finished seventh. He has been training hard for this race and we will see how it goes tomorrow,” said Campbell.
