GLASGOW: Mohd Fuad Redzuan and Khir Akyazlan Azmi have got past their first hurdles in the Commonwealth Games boxing competition.
Fuad defeated Inkululeko Suntele of Lesotho 3-0 in the men’s light flyweight (46-49kg) category on Saturday and is set to face Mohi Bullah of Pakistan in the round of 16.
Khir defeated Papua New Guinea’s Eko Noel 3-0 in the men’s light welterweight (64kg) category and will fight Ploutarchos Parris of Cyprus next.
However, it was the end of the road for Mohd Alnazirul Othman, who lost to Nick Cooney of Australia 3-0 in the men’s lightweight (60kg) opening bout.
Malaysia’s two other boxers are Mirage Khan (heavyweight 91kg) and Jaya Rahman (flyweight 52kg).
The Malaysian boxers returned home empty-handed from the New Delhi Games in 2010.
Malaysia last won a gold through Sapok Biki (light flyweight 49kg) at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games.
Since then, Malaysia have only a bronze, through Mohd Zamzai Azizi at the 2002 Manchester Games.
