Bowling: Veteran Alex wants Asian Games team gold

Malaysia have not won the team title since the 1978 Bangkok Games, though they did come close to achiveing it in Guangzhou in 2010 before Alex, Adrian Ang, Zulmazran Zulkifli, Mohd Syafiq Ridhwan and Muhd Nur Aiman and former bowler Aaron Kong had to be contented with a silver behind South Korea.

Alex, who is set to compete in his fifth Asiad since making his debut at the 1998 Bangkok Games, is also keen to defend his men’s doubles title (with Adrian) and the individual all events crown he won in Guangzhou four years ago.

“The attention is definitely on the Asian Games now. So, of course, our goal is to grab the men’s team gold. We came close in 2010 ... hopefully, 2014 will be our year.

It’ll be very nice to defend the two golds I won the last time,” said Alex.

“It looks like that the team will be announced in a few more weeks as we still have the youth bowlers competing in Hong Kong (World Youth Championships) this week. I’m sure there will be some young blood injected into the team.”

This year, the 38-year-old southpaw finished third in the Malaysian Open, 11th at the Euro-Med Storm International (both last month) and 16th at the Singapore Open last week.

“So far, so good. Overall it’s been a good year. Hopefully, the year will get even better. Last year, I won the Brunei Open and Kota Kinabalu Open, so hopefully there’s something around the corner,” said Alex.

In the last edition of the Games in 2010, Malaysia bagged the four medals – two golds, one silver and a bronze (women’s team). Their best performance to date remains smashing the six-medal haul at the 2006 Doha Games.
