PETALING JAYA: Selangor completed a double in the Inter-state Bowling Championships by winning the men’s and women’s team events at the Sunway Mega Lanes in Sunway Pyramid.
In Thursday’s men’s competition, Azidi Ameran, Zulmazran Zulkifli, Kang Bo Long and Alex Liew downed 5,255 pins after six games to beat Federal Territory (4,886 pins) to the gold medal. Johor completed the podium on 4,803 pins.
In the women’s event, Selangor’s Shalin Zulkifli, Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman, Natasha Roslan and S. Nivashini staved off a strong challenge from Perak to win with 5,013 pinfalls.
Perak faltered at the final game to settle for the silver medal with 4,986 pinfalls – just 27 pins shy of Selangor. Sarawak, sorely missing the injured Jacqueline Jenelee Sijore, settled for the bronze medal on 4,664 pins.
Shalin, having earlier won the singles and doubles gold medal, fell short of a clean sweep when Siti Safiyah took the gold medal in the women’s All-event.
The strong showing by Shalin could be an indication that the 36-year-old is ready to shoulder the country’s challenge in the Incheon Asian Games in September.
“I’m very pleased to have performed well in the meet but I think we still have time to make some improvements,” said Shalin.
“Being at the top of my game at such an early point like this is good but I always take it tournament by tournament. To me, every tournament is different and each marks the beginning of a new chapter.”
Just like Selangor in the men’s and women’s event, Federal Territory completed a whitewash in the boys’ and girls’ team events.
Selangor topped the medal standings with a 7-3-4 haul, toppling last year’s champions Federal Territory (5-4-2). Sarawak, champions in 2012, finished third overall with 2-3-3 haul.
