PETALING JAYA: National bowler Mohd Rafiq Ismail will not compete in the Inter-State and National Championships, which start at the Sunway Mega Lanes in Sunway Pyramid on Tuesday.
After the selection trials for the elite squad in January, the rising 17-year-old talent came down with a stress fracture on his right arm.
He was expected to recover in time for the two meets, but doctors at the National Sports Institute (NSI) have advised him to delay his return to competition until May.
“I have been advised not to lift heavy weights with my injured arm and that means I couldn’t compete yet.
“I think it is a good idea to delay my return because I have missed training since February … I don’t have the right form to compete anyway,” said Rafiq.
In last year’s Inter-State Championships, Rafiq managed to win a gold for Federal Territory in the team event. In the National Championships, he finished third.
“I have to re-condition my arm back to how it was before. Right now, I’m doing exercises by lifting light dumbbells before I can lift a heavy bowling ball.
“Maybe I can start training again on the lanes next week, depending on my condi—tion.
“Hopefully I will be ready to play in the Malaysian International Open (May 2-10) because it is an important event for national bowlers,” said Rafiq.
