PETALING JAYA: Selangor’s Nur Syazwani Sahar justified her status as a national youth bowler by winning the first gold medal in the MSSM (national schools) bowling championships at the Sunway Mega Lanes in Sunway Pyramid.
Being the only national youth bowler in the girls’ Under-15 competition, the 14-year-old Syazwani knocked down 1,253 pinfalls to emerge champion.
Pahang’s Alia Nadira Azmi was second with a 1,167 total while Terengganu’s Dini Nurina Azhan secured the bronze with 1,151 pinfalls.
“I felt some pressure at first because I’m the only national trainee competing in the Under-15 competition. Luckily, I managed to calm myself down. I then concentrated on my game. I hope to do the same to bag the doubles gold tomorrow (today),” said Syazwani, a SMK Seri Selayang student.
It was a double for Selangor as Tun Ameerul Luqman Tun Hasnul grabbed the boys’ Under-15 gold with a 1,262 total.
Nevern Netaneel Marcellinus of Sabah posted a 1,238 total to take the silver while Irfan Irsyadudin Ishanizam of Pahang accumulated 1,229 pinfalls for the bronze .
In the girls’ Under-18 event, Anis Syazlin Zulkisham of Penang stunned national youth bowler Nora Lyana Nastasia Norakmal of Putrajaya for the gold. Anis piled up the day’s best score of 1,301 to beat Nora Lyana’s 1,291 total. Nur Ameera Husna Aznel of Kedah settled for the bronze on 1,247 pinfalls.
Negri Sembilan clinched the other gold of the day when Mohd Qayyum Zahari emerged champion in the boys’ Under-18 singles with a 1,254 total. Wan Syahmi Razin Wan Rohadi of Selangor settled for the silver (1,240) while Mohd Aiman Hafizzudin of Pahang claimed the bronze (1,218).
