Jun Hao stuns Enzi to make second round

PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Leong Jun Hao (pic) has given himself an early birthday cheer.

Jun Hao, who turns 18 today, defeated sixth seed Enzi Shafira of Indonesia 16-21, 21-13, 21-17 in the first round of the Malaysian International Series in Putrajaya yesterday.

He will meet India’s Arun Kumar next.

“I’m quite happy with the win because my opponent is ranked higher and is quite a good player,” said Jun Hao, who is preparing to lead Malaysia’s challenge at the Asian Junior Championships in Jakarta from July 22-30.

“But I played well and didn’t make too many mistakes.

“The win has boosted my confidence ahead of the Asian Juniors.”

Besides Jun Hao, 11 other Malaysians – Lee Zii Jia, Lim Chi Wing, Cheam June Wei, R. Satheishtharan, Tan Jia Wei, Soo Teck Zhi, Ng Jun Yan, Goh Giap Chin, K. Jhotiswaran, Datu Mohd Saffuan and Mohd Lukman Hakim – also made the second round.
