KUALA LUMPUR: All the 10 shuttlers who helped Malaysia finish second in the Thomas Cup last month were given RM25,000 each, but there was no reward for the coaches.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) served a surprise just before their annual general meeting on Saturday by revealing a RM25,000 reward for each shuttler.
The shuttlers only knew about the incentive yesterday and six of them – captain Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng, Goh Soon Huat, Hoon Thien How, Lim Khim Wah and Chan Peng Soon – were present to collect their reward.
Four others – Lee Chong Wei, Goh V Shem, Tan Boon Heong and Tan Wee Kiong – did not attend the ceremony as they are competing in the Indonesian Open.
Asked why only the players were rewarded and not the coaches, BAM president Tengku Tan Sri Mahaleel Tengku Ariff said that they did not want to set a precedent.
“We actually have an incentive scheme for the players, but we did not reveal it. As for the coaches, they are under contracts and we will consider come bonus time.
”We do not want to set a precedent by rewarding them at this time,” said Tengku Mahaleel.
At the Finals in New Delhi, Malaysia surprisingly reached the final since 2002. They beat South Korea, Denmark and Indonesia before going down 2-3 to Japan in the final.
“The success would not have been achieved without a proper control system at the coaching and player level in place.
“We had studied all our expected opponents for more than two months. There was also a ruling in place for three days a week in training requiring all the shuttlers to play like they would normally be playing in a competition,” said Tengku Mahaleel.
“The players and coaches also stayed together to build team spirit. We will be doing this for every major competition.
“We have done well but we cannot be contented. The challenge now is for us to keep up the standards,” he added.
