KUALA LUMPUR: There are calls for changes to the playing format in the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) event committee have proposed that the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals be decided over two singles and one doubles – thus shortening the duration of the prestigious team event by dropping two other events.
This new suggestion will be deliberated by the BWF Council at the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals in New Delhi from May 18-25.
Currently, the Finals are decided over three singles and two doubles.
Many are of the opinion that the new format would benefit the Europeans, who are lacking in depth in team events. China and Indonesia will feel the pinch as they have quality players in both their singles and doubles line-ups.
Some, however, feel that the new format would excite the fans – and that it would be more suitable for the television audience. The whole battle will not drag on for five hours or more but could all be settled within three hours.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) general manager Kenny Goh likes the idea, saying that the world of badminton needs a change.
“It is still at the discussion stage but I quite like it. It’s not easy to find three good singles and two doubles pairs nowadays. I think it’ll be good for everyone,” said Kenny.
It will probably be a good idea for Malaysia right now as they are struggling to form a decent team for the Finals.
