Indonesians Muhammad Rian Adrianto-Rosyita Eka Putri Sari on their way to beating Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Puttita Supajirakul 21-19, 21-19 in the World Junior Championships mixed team event.
ALOR SETAR: Rosyita Eka Putri Sari was the driving force behind Indonesia’s stellar performance as they checked into the final of the World Junior Championships mixed team event.
Indonesia, runners-up to South Korea last year, went 2-0 up before Thailand fought back to level the score at 2-2. Rosyita, who delivered the vital first point, then gave Indonesia the winning point as well for a 3-2 triumph at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium here on Thursday.
“If you ask me what is the key to our success, I don’t have to think twice – it’s Rosyita. She has been instrumental throughout the competition and, today, she showed what she’s worth by getting us into the final,” said Indonesian coach Bambang Suprianto.
“Our target was to get to the semi-finals. Now, we’ve gone one step better. It’s probably one our best performances in this meet.”
Indonesia will meet eight-time champions China in Friday’s final.
China beat Japan 3-2 in the other semi-final.
“It won’t be easy facing China in the final. Their only weakness is in the boys’ singles. They’re very strong in other departments, so it won’t be easy. But we’re in the final and we’ll put our strongest team out tomorrow,” said Bambang.
Indonesia took an early 2-0 lead as Muhammad Rian Adrianto-Rosyita despatched Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Puttita Supajirakul 21-19, 21-19 before Anthony Sinisuka Ginting downed Kantaphon Wangcharoen 21-11, 21-7 in the boys’ singles.
Thailand bounced back through Busanan Ongbumrungpan and the boys’ doubles pair of Dechapol-Ketlen Kittinupong.
Busanan, ranked second in the junior, disposed of 16-year-old Ruselli Hartawan 21-16, 21-13 while Dechapol-Ketlen gave Thailand a lifeline by beating Clinton Hendrik-Rian 21-18, 21-11 in 29 minutes.
It fell on the shoulders of Rosyita and her partner Aprianti Rahayu to bring it home for Indonesia and they did just that, with a thumping 21-9, 21-13 win over Busanan and Puttita.
