No gold as Juwaidi settles for silver while Fatin contributes bronze

HOPES were high on the national compound archers but they fell short in the opening individual competition.

Two golds were targeted but Malaysia only managed a silver through Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki while Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh contributed a bronze at the National Archery Range in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

In the men’s final, Juwaidi failed to capitalise on an early three-point lead and eventually lost 144-145 to Indonesian Prima Wisnu Wardhana. Juwaidi, the bronze medallist at the 2015 Singapore Games, had led 59-56 at the end of the second set.

Frustration: Malaysian archer Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki reacting after losing to Indonesia’s Prima Wisnu Wardhana in the men’s compound final yesterday.

“I was not under pressure, maybe I was thinking too much (about winning) after getting off to a good start,” lamented Juwaidi.

“I wanted to win so much. Unfortunately, it was just not my day.

“But it’s okay. At least I have improved the medal colour from bronze to silver. I’ll still take this silver.”

Teammate Zulfadhli Ruslan, the silver medallist in 2015, could only manage fourth place. He lost 9-10 in the one-arrow shootoff with Paul Marton De La Cruz after their bronze playoff match ended 144-144.
