Sarawak out-shoot Kelantan in archery

Sarawak

KANGAR: Sarawak’s archery team skipper Cheryl Rudang Goh Pei Loke praised her younger team-mates - Kho Yee Ting and Wan Farah Aina Wan Ahamadi, for a golden debut in the women’s team recurve final.

The 16-year-old duo and Cheryl created an upset by beating favourites - Azuanis Abdullah, Nuur Shafika Shamsuddin and Nurul Amanina Rosmay of Kelantan 194-171 at the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Polytechnic ground in Pauh on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old Cheryl said her younger team-mates did well in their Sukma debut and it’s a good sign for archery in Sarawak.

“I’m impressed with both Yee Ting and Farah’s performance ... they were not overawed by our opponents and I’m very happy with their performance,” said Cheryl.

“We were a bit shaky at the start but managed to quickly settle in with our shooting. I think everyone executed the coach’s instructions well.”

Cheryl, who missed out on the bronze medal after losing to Kelantan’s Azuanis in the individual recurve event on Sunday, said the team event gold medal makes up for her slip-up.

“This is revenge for me over Kelantan after losing the bronze medal. I think I was a little bit hungrier for the gold medal today (Tuesday),” said Cheryl who had won the individual recurve gold medal in her debut at the Pahang Sukma in 2012.

“I was overconfident in the individual recurve round and ended up failing to defend the gold medal. I was very disappointed but now I’m glad to return home with the team gold medal.”
