GE14 is remembered for a historic change of government that was largely decided by voters aged 21 to 39 years old. Accounting for 41% of the electorate, they were by far the dominant demographic in last year’s election. It is fair to say the election was decided by a “youth tsunami”, and young Malaysians flocking to polling stations were experiencing a political awakening.
In light of this huge turnout, it is relevant that we revisit the question of lowering the Malaysian voting age from 21 to 18. Why should it matter to younger people that they should get a vote? Do we even have the necessary maturity and frame of mind to participate in this important civic activity?
