Health at work in IR4.0

Attendees eat and work on laptop computers during the South By Southwest (SXSW) conference in Austin, Texas, U.S., on Friday, March 9, 2018. Amid the raucous parties and speed networking at the annual festival that draws people from technology, film, and music to Austin, Texas, there will be some soul searching about gender discrimination, sexual harassment and how to fix the broken workplace culture. I REFER to the report “A pain in the neck, literally” (Sunday Star, March 18) which quoted a pilot study on the impact of Internet usage on psychological and medical health among teenagers.

The study conducted by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia recently found that most teenagers are viewing digital devices like smartphones and tablets at unhealthy angles, adding as much as 27kg of weight to their neck. This caused about 50% of teens in the study to have neck stiffness, or “text neck”, which can affect a person’s performance at school or work.
