Play your role to raise caring children

DR Shaik Ashraf’s comments in “Time to drop old stereotypes” (The Star, June 15) struck a chord in my heart. How many parents care and are able to do as Dr Shaik suggested? Many parents think they are raising their children well as long as they bring home good grades and are well behaved in their eyes.

I recalled an incident where the parent of my eldest girl’s primary school classmate called me up to complain that my daughter had poured a packet of chocolate milk on her daughter’s uniform in school. Appalled that my girl could do something like that, I questioned her and found out that her friend was bullying another girl by refusing to give her the packed food she had brought from home. She had placed it on top of a cupboard, leaving the poor girl clambering for it but to no avail. My girl’s reaction was wrong but she was helping a friend. I explained this to the friend and also apologised to the parent.
