Rotan is not an effective tool

THE death of Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gaddafi, the 11-year-old religious school pupil, who was punished by his warden, was a senseless one. The case caught the attention of Johor Permaisuri Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah (The Star, April 26th), who ordered all the children in the school who were punished by the warden to be sent for a medical examination.

Mohamad Thaqif’s death brings to mind the death of another religious school pupil in 2012. The child was accused of taking RM1 and was beaten to death by the hostel warden.
