Take action to prevent further mishaps

REFERRING to the report “Two drown as boat overturns” (The Star, Oct 31), I grieve for the families and their friends who lost loved ones. Accidents like this are preventable but there is a real and dangerous lack of awareness among the public when it comes to safe boating. It was reported that most of the passengers did not have a life jacket on when the accident happened.

Most of these leisure boats are owned and run by fishermen who, unfortunately, do not see the risks involved in not following safety rules. I recall reading at least three or four boating accidents a year in Port Dickson alone. There were cases where even the boatmen themselves were injured or killed.
