Get tough on users of emergency lanes

Federal highway for BRT story.

THE authorities should make a concerted effort to take action against inconsiderate motorists using the emergency lanes. There has been a lot of talk about arresting the problem but the situation is not getting any better.

This is a daily problem on the Federal Highway especially during peak hours, where among the culprits are the drivers of stage buses. On June 24 at around 8am, I was driving along the Federal Highway when an ambulance with its siren blaring was blocked by two buses and a few cars on the emergency lane heading towards the city just after the turn-off to Jalan Pantai Baru. The ambulance driver had to slow down before the vehicles moved to the right and then precariously go through as one bus was partly still on the emergency lane. The ambulance was probably ferrying a sick person or responding to an emergency call. These offenders have no respect for the law or the safety of other road users.
