Using punishment to hide inefficiency

I REFER to the report, “Don’t instil fear to control kids, says Chong” (Sunday Star, April 24) in which Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon was reported as saying that parents and teachers should take a more modern approach in disciplining children rather than by caning them. He was also quoted as saying, “In education one must have love for the children...”

With easy access to the Internet, children are nowadays more knowledgeable and tend to question their teachers to clear their doubts. As such, a good teacher should always keep abreast with advances in knowledge in the relevant areas and be in a position to answer the students’ queries.
