Get it right on foreign labour

THE recent months have seen some incredible developments involving foreign workers in Malaysia.

The Government made a surprise announcement that it would bring in 1.5 million workers from Bangladesh at the rate of 500,000 persons per year. What was truly ironic was that employers were taken by surprise and many voiced their concern, saying this was either not necessary or it was being done the wrong way. Everyone was sceptical about the motives behind the move as well as the companies which were awarded the contracts to bring in the foreign workers, and worried that it would push up the cost of doing business.
