Bleak year for cancer patients

TODAY is World Cancer Day (WCD). In just a few days, it will be Chinese New Year. But it seems the Year of the Monkey does not herald good news for cancer patients and their families. The whole world is experiencing economic uncertainty as oil prices slump, and for us the value of the ringgit is also low. Healthcare budgets are getting slashed and anti-cancer medications are expected to be more expensive.

The WCD campaign was established to create more awareness on the burdens faced by cancer patients. This year’s theme, “We Can, I Can”, hopes to bring together governments, organisations and individuals to provide better care and support for cancer patients and their family. The emphasis is on working together and sharing the load, as can be seen in a video posted on the WCD website.
