BUKIT MERTAJAM: PAS has retained the Permatang Pasir state seat.
Its candidate Mohd Salleh Man defeated Barisan Nasional’s Rohaizat Othman by a majority of 4,551 votes in the by-election yesterday.
Mohd Salleh obtained 9,618 votes to Rohaizat’s 5,067.
The majority yesterday was lower than that in the 2008 general election when PAS defeated Barisan Nasional by 5,433 votes.
Polling proceeded smoothly after a seven-day campaign, with only a small scuffle reported at a polling station.
Victory celebration: Supporters lifting Mohd Salleh after the results were announced in Berapit Tuesday night. Commenting on the loss yesterday, Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak admitted that there were “certain factors” which could have brought about the result.
He declined to reveal what the factors were but said Barisan would need to analyse the situation to overcome weaknesses.
His deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Barisan would work harder to win the trust of the people.
He admitted that Barisan’s choice of candidate could have brought about the loss.
