Ops Sepadu cuts crime in the city by 19%

KUALA LUMPUR: The all-out war against crime over the past month has resulted in a 19% drop in the city’s crime rate, prompting city police to extend their offensive for another month.

City deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm (I) Datuk Abu Samah Mat said the crackdown, dubbed Ops Sepadu, would be extended until June 16.

“Wayside robberies, and vehicle and snatch thefts dropped drastically, following the arrest of 2,852 people, including 678 foreigners and 59 Mat Rempit,” he said.

SAC Abu Samah said round-the-clock operations saw police arresting numerous people for drug-related offences, fighting, rioting, prostitution and Immigration offences.

He said more than 450 police personnel were involved in the operation, assisted by other enforcement agencies.

They also seized 976 knives and other sharp objects, as well as compounded over 200 vehicles.

“Members of the public played a big part in giving us valuable information. We thank them for their patience and understanding throughout the crackdown period.

He said that the complaints received were mainly on traffic congestion caused by the roadblocks and on-the-spot inspection conducted by policemen.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused,” he added.

On another note, SAC Abu Samah said beginning next week, all district police chiefs (OCPD) and officers in the city would conduct a meet-the-public session every Thursday between 9am and 2pm.

SAC Abu Samah said the officers would open up counters and meet the public to find out their concerns over crime and safety.

“The OCPDs will have the opportunity to listen to the public’s grouses, including those pertaining to the quality of investigations.

“The public can also come forward with any suggestions or ideas for the police force to further improve,” he said.
