Muhyiddin in Rome for World Summit on Food Security

By CHOI TUCK WO

ROME: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin flew in Sunday to attend the three-day World Summit on Food Security 2009 starting Monday.

Flight KL 1601 carrying the Malaysian entourage touched down at the Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport at 11.50am (6.50pm Malaysian time).

Muhyiddin and his wife, Puan Sri Noorainee Abdul Rahman were received on arrival by Malaysian Ambassador to Italy Ramli Naam and other senior officials.

The delegation then proceeded to the Westin Excelsior Hotel in the city.

The deputy premier will join more than 60 heads of states and governments in the global summit aimed at pushing for a new momentum to eradicate hunger affecting 1.02 billion people.

Muhyiddin is scheduled to deliver a country statement on implementation of global governance reforms on food security on Tuesday.

He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indonesian vice-president Prof Dr Boediono on the sidelines of the summit.

Organised by the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), the high-profile event seeks to marshal political will from world leaders in addressing the root causes of hunger.

The FAO has launched an online campaign www.1billion.org calling on the global population to go on a “hunger strike against hunger” to show solidarity for those who go without enough to eat every day.

Both FAO director-general Jacques Diouf and UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon went on 24-hour hunger strikes in a move to help build public pressure on world leaders to walk the talk.

The UN’s World Food Programme has also launched a “Billion for a Billion” campaign (www.wfp.org/1billion) in a bid to get a billion internet users to help feed all the hungry people in the world.
