Balik Pulau Umno Youth call for CM’s resignation
By ANDREA FILMER
GEORGE TOWN: The Balik Pulau Umno Youth wing has called for the resignation of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for allegedly misleading the state assembly over a land conversion issue in August this year.
Its Youth chief Aziaan Ariffin claimed Lim lied to the house in a written answer to Pulau Betong assemblyman Muhamad Farid Saad over an issue of land conversion.
He said Lim had stated in his written answer to Muhamad Farid on Aug 10 that the state had yet to bring its policy of land conversion to the National Land Council.
“However, we have proof that the state had given the go-ahead for the status of a piece of prime land -- Lot 408, Section 19 of George Town -- to be converted from leasehold to freehold for PDC Heritage Hotel Sdn Bhd,” Aziaan alleged in a press conference at the Balik Pulau Umno office on Wednesday.
It has been reported that the area concerned is a 1.4ha plot with nine vacant pre-war houses located beside the E&O Hotel.
Aziaan, who is also State Umno Youth treasurer, said he was in possession of documents from the state Land Office detailing how the state executive council had given the green light for the conversion on May 27 this year and later ratified the decision in another exco meeting on June 3.
“We know that approval has been given for the conversion, but we are unsure how far the process has gone,” he said.
He demanded that Lim own up to his alleged untruths and resign as Chief Minister.
“We are disappointed with the blatant lie that Lim told.
“As a Chief Minister and a leader, he should speak the truth and not lie to the house,” he said.
On Tuesday, state Opposition leader Datuk Azhar Ibrahim said Lim would be asked to reveal the status of a piece of prime land on Farquhar Street.
He had said all 11 Barisan Nasional assemblymen would raise this matter during the state assembly sitting scheduled to start on Nov 30.
When contacted, Lim’s press secretary Cheong Yin Fan said Lim was on a one-week trade mission to the Middle East.
“He will give his comments on the issue upon his return on Nov 14 or during the next state assembly sitting on Nov 30,” she said.
