Witness claims he was forced to give false statement

TEMERLOH: Wangsa Maju Umno Youth chief Mohd Taupik Hussain told the Sessions Court here on Wednesday that the harsh treatment by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers had traumatised him, forcing him to make false statement.

He said he gave a false statement to a Kuantan MACC investigating officer on Jan 23 this year.

Mohd Taupik, who is the second witness in the corruption trial involving former Kuala Lumpur-Federal Territory Umno Youth head Datuk Mohamad Norza Zakaria and his agent, Halimi Kamaruzzaman, said this during a hearing to challenge his credibility as a witness before judge Azuar Che Yusof here.

Questioned by counsel Datuk Seri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, Mohd Taupik said he was physically and mentally tortured by MACC officers in the interrogation room of the Kuantan MACC office.

Mohd Taupik said he was taken to the Kuantan MACC office on Jan 22 at about 5pm and was taken to a room where he was told to remove his clothing, except the underwear, and was asked to do the “ketuk-ketampi” (squats with the hands holding the ears), pushups and to roll on the floor.

He claimed that the three officers there also hit him on the head with his shoes.

“They kicked my thigh and stepped on my buttocks while asking whether I met Datuk Norza and received an envelope from him.

“The torture went on until about 11pm when I was then ordered to sign a form for detainees at 11.14pm,” he added.

Mohd Taupik said he was taken to the MACC office again at 11am the following day and at about 5pm taken to the interrogation room where the MACC officers insulted and threatened him.

He said he made a false statement that he had received 20 white envelopes which were tied with rubber bands from Mohamad Norza at a meeting at Mont Kiara at 8pm last Jan 19.

Questioned by Muhammad Shafee whether he still keep the shoes used by the MACC officers to hit his head, Mohd Taufik said yes and produced a pair of black shoes from a bag.

Mohamad Norza, 43, a former Umno supreme council member, is charged with offering a RM1,500 bribe to Khadri Musa, through Halimi Kamaruzzaman, to be given to the delegates to vote for him for a supreme council seat in the Umno general assembly in March.

He is also charged with giving a RM1,900 bribe to Mohammad Anuar Yunus, through Halimi, for the same purpose.

Both offences were allegedly committed at No 38, Pinggiran Tasik, Taman Bandar Temerloh, at 6.30pm on Jan 20.

Halimi, 47, of Kuantan, is charged with two counts of giving bribes to Khadri and Mohammad Anuar at the same place and time.

Hearing continues Thursday. -- Bernama
