‘Stay away from fuel rally’

By DHARMENDER SINGH

SHAH ALAM: The public should stay away from the rally planned by the Coalition Against Inflation (Protes) to speak up against the recent fuel price hikes on Sunday as no permit has been sought for it.

State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said till now, no one had applied for a permit for the rally being planned to be held at the Timur field in Petaling Jaya.

He said he approached Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim on Tuesday to ask that the rally be shifted from the Timur field that had limited space to a better location for public safety but had not received any answer from the Mentri Besar's office.

He was speaking to reporters after launching the Community Policing activity for Shah Alam at the Hyundai main office here yesterday.

He also said that police would take necessary action if the rally was held at the Timur field without a permit.

Meanwhile, organising committee member Latheefa Koya said she could not understand why police consulted the Mentri Besar on issues about the rally when the state government was not involved in organising it.

“This is a rally that is organised by Protes, which comprises several NGOs, and the only involvement of the state government was to grant us approval to use the field,” she said.

Latheefa said the organisers had not officially informed the police of the gathering yet as they were still trying to decide on the location.

She said the Melawati Stadium here was one of the locations that the organisers were considering.

“But even after the location is decided on, we will not seek a permit but will only inform the police of the rally and its location.

“It is a matter of principle because this is not a political rally but one to voice out the dissatisfaction of the people over the difficulties faced following the fuel price hike and the people have the right to gather and be heard,” she said.
