Zaid quits his law firm (updated)
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has resigned as chairman and senior partner of Zaid Ibrahim & Co, while also relinquishing his shareholding in the law firm following his appointment as Minister in the Prime Minister's Department.
Zaid, who was given the law portfolio in the Cabinet, would be replaced by Datuk Dr Nik Norzul Thani who has assumed the role of chairman of the firm with immediate effect.
Zaid Ibrahim & Co was founded by Zaid in 1987 and has grown from a one-man show to become the largest law firm in Malaysia with over 140 lawyers.
In a statement, Dr Nik Norzul said it would be business as usual as far as the firm was concerned.
"When Zaid became Kota Baru MP in 2004, the firm put in place a succession plan which we are now carrying out," he said, adding that Zaid had left big shoes to fill.
Dr Nik Nozrul has been with the firm since 1998 and heads the firm's Islamic Finance practice.
Under Section 30(c) of the Legal Profession Act 1976, a lawyer would be disqualified from applying for a practising certificate if he is employed by any other person, firm or body in a capacity other than as an advocate or solicitor.
