Palace official: Kijal assemblyman Ahmad Said to be made Terengganu MB

KUALA TERENGGANU: Kijal assemblyman Datuk Ahmad Said will be sworn-in as Mentri Besar of Terengganu, a state palace official confirmed Saturday.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held on Sunday, he said.

On Friday, a group of Barisan Nasional state assemblymen sent a memorandum to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi urging him to retain state Umno liaison committee chief Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh as Mentri Besar, after hearing news that the former Mentri Besar might not be retained for the post due to a purported fall-out with the palace.

The assemblymen plan to boycott Ahmad Said's swearing-in and also send a protest note to the palace, Ajil assemblyman Datuk Rosol Wahid said on Saturday.

Idris was widely expected to be made Mentri Besar for a second term after he led the state Barisan Nasional to victory in the recent polls, but talk of palace objections to the move surfaced just days after the conclusion of the general election.

The stand-off has resulted in Terengganu being the only state left without a Mentri Besar or Chief Minister.

Barisan Nasional won 24 state assembly seats and PAS eight in the recent elections.

Ahmad Said, 51, holds a degree in political science from Universiti Sains Malaysia. He was the Assistant District Officer for Setiu and Kemaman before entering politics in 1990.
