PM: Public apathy linked to crime rise
BUTTERWORTH: Public apathy is one of the reasons for the escalating crime rate, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said.
He said he was aware of public complaints and concerns on this matter.
I am listening and the police too are hearing your concerns. The police are doing their best to arrest the problem.
But the public should not blame the police and leave everything to them. You must also help the police.
I know that there are also crimes that happen in the house. We must ensure that our house is a safe and pleasant place, he said when opening the Puteri Gunung Community-based Rehabilitation Centre in Taman Tasek Indah, Simpang Ampat, here.
Abdullah said he had also told Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein to advise teachers to look after students who had to wait for their parents outside their schools. He said this was when something bad happened to them, including abduction.
They are only a bunch of kids and naive about their surroundings. Teachers must not be too petty about helping these students as it is not their fault (to have to wait for their parents).
By all means, help them and call their parents or wait with them until their parents come and fetch them.
Abdullah said the Government would recruit an additional 60,000 policemen and deploy more patrol cars.
We need to deploy more policemen on the streets to make their presence felt in order to deter crime from happening, he said.
The additional policemen and patrol cars will be deployed at crime-prone areas, especially in the Klang Valley, Penang and Johor.
