Many with credit, debt woes turning to agency
JOHOR BARU: Some 65,000 people have sought the advice of Bank Negara’s Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency since its inception two years ago.
Of the number, 45,000 received counselling on monetary problems while the others signed up for the financial and debt management programmes.
Bank Negara deputy governor Datuk Zamani Abdul Ghani said the agency, which has a branch in every state, dealt with people with financial problems as well as those who sought advice on problems relating to their businesses and personal expenditure.
“People are responding well towards the agency by seeking counselling on financial management as well as financial problems.

In Johor, of the 8,000 people who sought the agency’s services, about 2,500 received counselling on various financial problems while the remaining signed up for the programmes.
Asked about the loan shark problem, Zamani said most of those who borrowed money were gamblers.
“There are also those who borrowed money for business purposes. I think those with business interest do not know where to seek financial advice. Now they can seek such advice from the agency,” he said.
On the three-day fair, Zamani said it would give people the opportunity to gain more knowledge on good financial management from the various agencies and financial institutions available at the fair.
“This is the first time we are organising such a fair and we may do it in other states after this. So far, the response has been encouraging with 6,000 people attending it on Friday.”
