Global theme for batik at Piala Seri Endon contest

By OLIVIA LEE

KUALA LUMPUR: Inspired by the dark and mysterious elements of Gothic culture, Lucas Lim and Zoe Tan crafted their Face Illustration collection.

Yesterday, the duo came up tops in the Fashion category at this year's Piala Seri Endon batik design competition.

“I didn't want to keep to the traditional floral prints and I've always been fascinated by the Gothic look,” said Lim, 26, after he and his teammate received their prize from the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah at the KL Convention Centre here yesterday.

“Batik doesn't have to be boring,” he said, adding that Malaysian batik was contemporary, unique and could easily command world acceptance.

It was an attitude and enthusiasm shared by the other talents, who came into the competition with a single sense of purpose – to transform the commonly perceived lacklustre batik prints into refreshing contemporary styles in the name of globalisation.

The competition also provided fresh insights into batik through two other categories, Soft Furnishing and Handicraft.

Second-placed in the Fashion category, Junaidi Awang agreed that batik needed a global spin, but without discarding its cultural roots.

He infused traditional motifs like the tapak Sulaiman and bunga pecah lapan berantai into his Wild Wild West enthused designs, giving his songket outfits an interesting eye-catching fusion of cultures.

He aptly named his collection Malaysia Songket ... Crafted for the World.

Sabah trio Jamilah Shukri, Jaludin Zaini and Halmi Chek, who banded as the Pua Indah team, were named second runners-up in the category, with their Iban-influenced collection.

Jamilah, 54, said batik did not have to be conventional.

“We decided to keep it classic, elegant, practical and yet modern,” she said.

The Rentak Borneo team of Jeffry Inche Mat and Mohd Sharizan Tarmizi, with their eye-catching Red of Zen theme took the top award in the Soft Furnishing category.

Second-placed was Amri Wan Yusof (Urban Oriental) and third was the Hussin Muhammad and Dr Nik Fakhuruddin Nik Hassan (Ranting).

In the Handicraft category, the team called Untitled, comprising Fadzli Irwan Bahrudin, Liew Yong Kian and Syahir Mohd Halid were judged champs for their creation Fusion Batik.

Titing Limbos Ng (Golden Jubilee) was first runner-up and Yap Julia (My Dreamy Litter), second runner-up in the category.

The Piala Seri Endon, organised by Yayasan Budi Penyayang Malaysia under the Malaysia Batik – Crafted For the World movement, was started by Datin Seri Endon Mahmood, the late wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Present at the grand finals of the competition yesterday were foundation chairman Nori Abdullah and foundation CEO Datuk Leela Mohd Ali.

The prize money for each category was sponsored by The Star.

Winners of each category received RM30,000, while the first and second runners-up received RM10,000 and RM5,000 respectively.

There were five consolation prizes of RM1,000 in each category.
