Thai coup leaders give regional army commanders local administrative powers
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Thai coup leaders on Wednesday morning announced that the country's four regional army commanders have been appointed to keep the peace and run civil administration in their respective areas outside the capital Bangkok.
The army staged a successful coup against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Tuesday night.
The commanders' duties were assigned in the latest announcement on television by the coup leaders, who call themselves the "Council of Administrative Reform.''
The announcement said those who resist the commanders would be severely punished. It also ordered provincial governors and other heads of government agencies, as well as university rectors, to report to the regional commanders. - AP
