Boyfriend talk sparked off attack
By STEPHEN THEN
MIRI: A boyfriend dispute led to the attack by a female school gang on a Form Two schoolgirl at a beachfront here.
Investigations found that the victim was from St Columba Secondary School here, while her attackers – all lower secondary students – were from St Joseph Secondary School, about 1km away.
The victim had allegedly made some remarks about the boyfriend of one of the gang members, which offended her.
The assault came to light after it was videotaped and the footage circulated over the Internet and via camera phones. They showed at least five girls in school uniform punching, slapping, kicking and pulling the hair of the victim as a group of schoolboys watched nearby.
It is learnt a report on the probe by the St Joseph school management had been completed and submitted to the Education Ministry and the Sarawak State Education Department.
“All the schoolgirls featured in the video footage have been identified and hauled up before their principal. The person who videotaped the whole incident has also been identified,” a source told The Star yesterday.
“The beatings were violent and lasted some time. The school management wants to know why these young students turned so aggressive,” he said, pointing out that the videotaping of the act could have urged them on.
“Recommendations on disciplinary action have been made and the school will leave it to the ministry and education department to decide on the most appropriate action.”
It is learnt the students’ parents had been directed to see St Joseph principal Marcus Gau Lian to explain their children’s behaviour.
Meanwhile, the Miri police is awaiting instructions from higher authorities on whether to probe the case as neither the victim nor the school authorities have lodged police reports.
