Girls in assault video identified

MIRI: The female students who were featured assaulting another girl in a video taken from a website have been identified – they are all lower secondary students.

The victim is 14 years old.

The Education Ministry, state Education Department and the schools involved have launched an internal investigation.

ACP Fauzie: ‘For the time being, the case is being investigated as an internal school matter’
The victim went to the Miri Central police station yesterday to give a statement, accompanied by her mother.

She had bruises on her face and looked shaken and distressed but appeared to be not seriously injured.

Miri police chief Asst Comm Fauzie Saadi said the management of St Joseph Secondary School here had lodged a report with the police liaison officers assigned to the school.

“For the time being, the case is being investigated as an internal school matter. The case is also under investigation by the Education Ministry and state Education Department.

“The police are not treating this as a public crime, as there is no official criminal complaint yet, although it happened outside the school compound.

“We are monitoring how the school’s investigation is progressing,” he added.

St Joseph Secondary School principal Marcus Gau Lian, when met at his office, said he was not authorised to give details of the investigation.

“The Education Ministry and state Education Department are in charge of this case now. Our school will have to furnish them the results of the investigation. I cannot give any comment,” he told The Star.

He only confirmed that the school management had sought the help of the police liaison officers to haul up those suspected of being involved in the attack.

Yesterday morning, the principals and senior teaching staff of schools in Miri scrutinised the footage repeatedly, trying to identify the students and the victim.

The assault lasted about seven minutes.

The victim was repeatedly punched, kicked, slapped, pushed around and had her hair pulled.

It took place at a shelter on the Miri beachfront.
