Solid waste strategy only after April 28
A FINAL proposal on solid waste management will be made when the Cabinet committee on the environment meets on April 28.
Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said the meeting would also make recommendations on previously approved projects.
We will draw up a solid waste management strategy for the entire country following the decision of the committee, he said when winding up the debate for the Ninth Malaysia Plan for his ministry.
Ong said that although several solid waste management projects had been approved, there were now many new views on how to manage waste properly.
Some are talking about refuse-derived fuel (RDF).
We will have to wait for the meeting for a policy direction on these, he said.
Ong was asked about the status of the Broga incinerator and the Kampung Bohol solid waste transfer station by Markiman Kobiran (BN Hulu Langat) and Lau Yeng Peng (BN Puchong) respectively.
He said they would have to wait until after April 28 for a further decision.
On the request by Teresa Kok (DAP Seputeh) to consider relocating the Broga incinerator, Ong said she had suggested relocating it to an outskirts area like Semenyih when it was originally meant to be built in Kampung Bohol near her constituency.
The Government decided to relocate it to Broga which is in Semenyih and now she is saying dont build it there, he said.
She then suggested using landfills but when there was a leak, she said the Government should not build landfills.
What does she want us to do?
Kok then stood up and suggested that the incinerator be built in Putrajaya, to which Ong said it was unfair to make such a suggestion.
Why should all the rubbish from outside be brought to Putrajaya? he asked.
When Kok asked why the Government did not go for the RDF technology, Ong quickly commended her for supporting such a solution.
I hope Seputeh will not object if RDF is used in her constituency later, he said.
On another issue, Ong said that his ministry would not let any developer get away with defying the decisions of the House Buyers Tribunal.
He said his ministry would haul developers who refused to obey the orders of the tribunal to court.
I hope they will get a jail sentence so that it will deter other developers, he said.
Ong said there were a few hundred cases where developers had refused to respect the decision of the tribunal.
They will face the second phase of action by the ministry, which will haul them to court, he said.
