Sterling show from juniors
By Y.P. Sivam
SRAS or Squash Rackets Association of Selangor are convinced that they are on the right track in grooming juniors for the future.
SRAS secretary Mary Ong said they are impressed by their juniors' results in recent competitions.
Besides the schools age group competition, Ong said the juniors particularly those aged 12 and below, gave a good account in the Milo-National Sports Council (NSC)- Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) - junior squash circuit held in Penang, recently.
“Some of them were not among the seeded players but rose to the occasion to win titles. We are convinced that these players could be groomed to take over from the seniors in SRAS' development programmes,” said Ong.
In Penang, Selangor juniors made it to eight of the 12 finals.
And seven of them were champions.
In the girls Under-9 category, Zoe Foo, who is only seven years old, defeated Sarawak's Danielle Wee Hui Zin 9-6, 9-4 in the final.
Selangor's T. Mithila was the surprise winner in the girls Under-13 category.
The fourth seeded Mithila was stretched to the extreme before winning 9-2, 6-9, 9-1, 9-8 against Penang's Vannesa Raj.
Selangor also won the girls Under-15 title through Yong Sue Ann who defeated Pahang's Ang Roxanne 9-5, 9-1, 8-9, 4-9, 9-7 in the final.
However Selangor's P.T. Pushppa Devi lost 3-9, 4-9, 4-9 to Penang's Low Wee Wern in the girls Under-19 category.
Selangor won four titles in the boys category.

Lim Eu Jin put up a gutsy display against Kuala Lumpur's Raja Adam before winning 9-0, 5-9, 9-6, 7-9, 9-1 in the Under-13 category.
Ng Jo Wen, returning to the courts after recovering from a knee injury, was also in form to defeat Penang's Keshminder Singh 5-9, 9-5,9-1,9-1in the Under-17 category.
National junior Ivan Yuen came from a game down and defeated Penang's Randy Lim 6-9, 9-2, 9-6, 9-0 in the Under-19 group.
The juniors are all trainees of the SRAS- Petaling Jaya junior development programme.

Ong said they would continue to focus on grassroots.
“Our aim is to produce players for the state and country. We are pleased to see our juniors making it to the national junior squad,'' said Ong.
