Champion a hit with the kids

By Y.P. SIVAM

NEWLY crowned British Junior Open Under-13 champion Tan Yan Xin was a hit with participants at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Cari Champions squash programme at the 3K Sports Complex in Subang Jaya recently.

About 150 primary school children had the opportunity to meet Tan, who shared her progress with the participants.

The Cari Champions programme was organised by the Squash Rackets Association of Selangor (SRAS) with support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Milo.

SRAS secretary Mary Ong said the programme aimed to introduce squash to children.

“They cannot become champions overnight.

“Our aim is to create opportunities for children to take up squash. It would take about three months for a beginner to learn the basics,'' explained Ong.

3K resident squash coach Leong Eng Kiat and his son Leroy, a Selangor junior, were also present to give tips to the participants.

After almost two hours of drills, the participants were also given the chance to hit the ball.

Leong said the children were enthusiastic and eager to learn the basics.

“They have to return for more lessons to be accomplished players.

“It was also good to see parents showing an interest in squash.

“Without parental guidance, it would be difficult for children to be involved in sports,'' said Leong.

Ong, who is also the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MPPJ) junior squash programme co-ordinator, said parents were encouraged to send their children for weekly training sessions at the 3K Complex or PJ Astaka.
