KUALA LUMPUR: If the response from China and Hong Kong journalists is any indicator, renowned Malaysian singer-songwriter Michael Wong will be a huge success as Tourism Malaysia's ambassador for the Asia Pacific region.

The 36-year-old is such a big hit in China and Hong Kong that their journalists came to Malaysia for the press conference announcing his official appointment.

Wong said he had not expected the honour.

“Through my music, people can have a peek at my cultural background that shapes my personality and music style.

“Now, with the appointment, I have been given a bigger platform to introduce my country to my fans and foreigners,” he added.

Wong will soon shoot television commercials that will be broadcast to various different countries in the Asia Pacific region. The commercials will feature the Malaysian landscape and tourist attractions.

Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai said the media in China could help bring in more Chinese tourists.

He said 550,241 tourists from China visited Malaysia in 2004, a 56.9% increase compared with the 350,597 in 2003.

“But in the first 10 months of last year, we saw a 45.5% drop in Chinese tourist arrivals due to competition from new destinations and also due to the nude ear-squat controversy,” he said.

Phoenix Satellite Television Co Ltd senior reporter Li Jie, who was among the more than 100 journalists at the press conference said she had read many negative reports about Malaysia in China.

“But what I have seen since arriving here yesterday is a totally different situation. I think Chinese tourists should come and see this beautiful country for themselves,” she added.
