Rep amuses peers with request on maternity leave

A WOMAN delegate tickled the assembly when she said she had “closed production.”

Dr Azizah Johor had proposed that maternity leave be increased to 90 days to benefit young working mothers.

“We have closed production already,” she said, referring also to Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz and deputy Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

“I am asking on behalf of our children, grandchildren and for your children too,” she said, in seconding the Economic and Education motion.

She added that the movement would continue to ask the party president Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to consider their request next year if it could not be done now.

“We will wait faithfully,” Dr Azizah said.

As a rejoinder to her remarks, deputy permanent chairman Datuk Badruddin Amiruldin quipped: “Operasi jalan lagi walaupun production tutup. Tanya Kak Dah (The operation continues even though the production has stopped. Ask Rafidah).”

Dr Azizah, aware of the apparent reference to sex, said the women would remain faithful to their husband and to the party even if their request for the extended maternity leave is not granted.

Earlier, she told the assembly that women in high positions had got there despite facing difficulties.

“We have to work three times as hard as the men to prove we deserve the posts,” she said.
